Saturday November 10th ~ Training Races Session #5 3:00-6:00pm. These training races keep getting better ‘n better!! In Session #4 Jennie Reed & Travis Smith were assisted by Gideon Massie! Together they provided us with tons of helpful info and insider tricks of the trade. After a 40 lap pace line style group warmup, we all had another go at the Flying 200’s. Neva Day did a fine Flying 200 even with her aero bars on, however, her Pursuiter’s mentality momentarily tricked her into eyeing the wrong finish line! In the end, we all added some valuable tools to our tool boxes. While I certainly have a ways to go I can definately see my improvements in both time & technique from week to week.
After a quick round of Flying 200’s, we moved on to begin learning how to do Standing Starts. When you think about it, more track races begin with a standing start than not. The list of standing start events includes, Match Sprints, Keiren, Team Sprint, Olympic Sprint and all the pursuits (500m, 750m, Kilo, 2k, 3k, 4k and Team Pursuit). It is easy to see why it’s pretty important to learn and develop good Standing Start skills.
Once we’d all taken a turn or three doing a Standing Start, we moved back over to the Keiren. The Keiren is actually a very helpful race. It is, after all, an 8 lap scratch race with only about a half dozen participants. So if you think about it, racing the Keiren is perhaps the best training you can do to prepare for the last 8 laps of any scratch or points race! Learning how to plan ahead, how to get on the wheel you want whether you want to be in the front or in the back or somewhere in the middle; learning what tactic will allow you to best which opponent(s); the whole art of setting up the finish the way you want it be has high value in any race.
A huge Thank You!” to Jennie, Travis & Giddeon for all your helpful info and for your time!
Session #5 ~ This Saturday, we will continue working on Standing Starts as we move into some mass start events. If you know how to do these events, please come help us all learn; if you don’t know how to do these events, please come learn with us!!
As always, you will need to bring your current racing license along with your own track bike, helmet, shoes, pedals and any additional equipment that you may need. Rental bikes will be available for Juniors only (at no charge). Training Race Session fee is $10 in addition to your normal track fee.
All participants must be certified by the velodrome director, Roger Young prior to the first session. If you are a female & have attended one or more LOTS then you are considered to be certified. If you are not female then check the LA Velodrome website for a schedule of upcoming Certification Classes.
