Saturday March 8th ~ This past Saturday’s LOTS was a very special occasion! Yes we were cramped for time on both ends of the session but it was certainly an exciting session. We were honored to have three current World Champions joining us at the LA Velodrome this past Saturday!! All three Ladies won their Title and their Jersey at the UCI World Masters Track Championships in Sydney, Australia, October 16-21, 2007.
The first World Champion we met was Linda Miller (Valley Center, CA). Linda (Rt side of the photo above) has been racing for several years. In 2002 she raced the W50-54 500m TT and set a new World Record time of 40.202. She went on to win more than one National Championship Jersey. Most recently, in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, she won the title of World Champion in the Sprints in the W55+ division.
The second World Champion we met was Donna Smith (Cowiche, WA). After watching her son race on the track, Donna (left side of the photo above) finally decided she ought to give it a try. Like Linda, Donna has won several National Championship titles on the track. In August 2006 at Masters Nationals in Colorado Springs, Donna broke Linda’s W50-54 500m TT World Record when she raced the distance in 39.862. Unfortunately the event did not have drug testing available so her World Record time was not recognized. Undeterred, Donna came out to the LA Velodrome for Elite Nationals and raced the Women’s 500m TT. Again she broke Linda’s World Record and went under 40 seconds. After the paper work from her drug test at that event was “lost”, her World Record was once again, not recognized. USA Cycling did recognize her efforts as a new National Record but they were not recognized as a new World Record. Her most recent accomplishment on the track is her World Championship Jersey which she won in Sydney in 2007 in the W45-54 Sprints.
The third World Champion we met was long time LOTS participant and local road racer Lauren Jacobsen. Lauren (centered in the photo above) won the W50-54 500m TT in Sydney in 2007 and was the first women in her age division to have her sub 40 second time recognized as a new World Record. Lauren raced the distance in a time of 39.70. Finishing 2nd barely behind Lauren, was Donna Smith with a time of 39.85.
All three of these Ladies are great competitors on the bike and great friends off the bike and we really enjoyed getting to know them. They are ordinary Mom’s and women who have accomplished extraordinary goals in the sport of Track Cycling. I hope everyone gleaned something from them!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please note: The April 12th and May 10th LOTS will NOT be sandwiched in between anything. We expect to have a great time with plenty of time for everyone to ride till you can’t turn the pedals one more time! Please be early so you will have time to sign in and get ready. The session begins at 12noon.
The 2008 USAC Athlete Waiver is available on-line.
I highly recommend completing a waiver on-line with all of the basic info that does not change from race-to-race. Then name & save the partially completed waiver to your computer as a “PDF” file. On race day (or the night before), all you have to do is complete the Event Specifics, print it, sign it and stick it in your gear bag. This is super helpful when 4 or members of your family (or team) all race together!
The 2008 SCNCA Racing Calendar is available.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The 2008 USAC Rule book is available on-line.
