News from our US Ladies now home from the Beijing World Cup ~ If you thought the US Ladies meant business in Sydney last week…then hold on to your helmets…cuz they really showed their stuff in China!! Complete technical race results for all the Sydney WC Competitors can be found at http://www.tissottiming.com/sports/cycling/track/classics0708_sydney/index.htm
But who got how many points does not even do the athletes or Beijing any justice!! Here is Neva Day’s report in her own words….”We have made it back (home) from the first two World Cups. Thank you all for your support through this endeavor. Our (SBW) riders all did extremely well and worked as a strong team through racing and traveling. Becky Quinn's accomplishments were outstanding. Becky Quinn placed 5th and 6th in the scratch races and 4th and 5th in the Points race. Placing top 10 in 4 mass start events is extremely hard and I believe she may be the only rider in the international women's field to do this so far this year. Even more impressive is Becky was involved in a massive crash at the 4th sprint in the Beijing points race. It was a serious crash and her bike was damaged, mostly both her pedal/cleat combos. Becky was able to get back into the race within the allotted five laps but was unable to clip into her pedals because her pedal system broke in the crash. Becky, holding third place through the 6th sprint, was determined not to quit despite her injuries and her equipment failures and continued to earn points against top riders such as USA counter-part Sarah Hammer, Australia's World Champion Kate Bates, and 21 other top riders. Becky rode an unbelievable 40 laps on broken pedals not clipped in, unable to stand or sprint out of the saddle and still placed 5th overall and was the best USA finisher of 4 riders. It was an incredible race to watch and see what she was able to do despite serious obstacles. Becky did all of this in SBW colors which was beyond great. Because of her determination and skill in both UCI races placing her 4th and 5th she earned the top World Cup points to date and thus earned the World Cup Leader’s jersey, the most coveted jersey next to a World Champion’s jersey. She was in medical under close supervision after the race due to her injuries and she was dragged out against our better judgment and then awarded the jersey which was a very humbling moment for her. It was a highlight to see her earn the jersey which was a complete surprise. She has spent a majority of her life devoted to cycling and this was a first ever for her. Becky earned the respect of the international cycling community as the greatest coaches in cycling paid great respect to her riding throughout the two events- it was incredible for Becky. SBW, and the USA.
Next stop: Los Angeles World Cup January 18th.
Neva Day -SBW UCI Track Team

As a side note: Unfortunately half of the team members from most of the countries (including the US) were too sick to get out of bed to race in Beijing. Our thoughts are with them as they try to recover in time for the LA World Cup in January!

Saturday December 8th LOTS Report. The December Ladies Session was both busy and exciting! The cold rainy weather brought more than 30 women indoors to the track for a fun afternoon of training and racing. It was fun getting to know the Ladies from the Hellyer Park Velodrome. They have enthusiastically invited all the So Cal Track Ladies to make some time this coming spring to take a road trip up to San Jose to visit their track. If any of you are planning to race there in September at Masters Track Nationals, you might want to take them up on their offer! It was recently announced that the Hellyer Park Velodrome will be the site of the 2008 Masters National Championships.

Thank you to Ted Ernst for coaching the Ladies of the South Bay Wheelmen as well as any/all the other Ladies who looked to you for advice! Thank you Johnny Walsh for helping with the equipment and the coaching! The LOTS Program is working because of awesome folks like you guys!

CARSON, CALIFORNIA – (Thursday, November 29, 2007) – The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Track Cycling World Cup Classics return to the United States Jan. 18 to 20, 2008 at the ADT Event Center at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

World Cup races are amongst the most prestigious on the UCI calendar, providing riders and countries the opportunity to qualify for the 2008 Olympic Games in China. After stops in Sydney and Beijing, the Los Angeles event is the third of the four-race World Cup series in the 2007-08 season.

More than 400 athletes from 40 countries, including the United States, will participate in the three-day event in California. The ADT Event Center at The Home Depot Center has hosted one UCI Track World Championships, in addition to three previous World Cups. Last year, U.S. rider and Southern California resident Sarah Hammer (Temecula, Calif.) took home two gold medals and set a track record in the individual pursuit before claiming her second consecutive world title in April. Hammer enters the 2007-08 international track cycling season as a favorite to win a gold medal in the individual pursuit. Also set to compete in January is Becky Quinn (Quakertown, Pa.). Quinn captured a national title in the women’s points race – another Olympic event – at the USA Cycling Elite Track National Championships last month at the ADT Event Center.
Other featured riders include Olympic hopefuls and National Champions Christen King (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Dotsie Bausch (Irvine, Calif.), as well as veteran Olympic athletes Jennie Reed (Kirkland, Wa.) and Adam Duvendeck (Santa Barbara, Calif.), both of whom train year-round at the ADT Event Center at The Home Depot Center.

This year’s World Cup in Los Angeles represents more local participation than any other World Cup. Popular teams from Southern California who will compete include Rock Racing, Momentum, Team Ouch and the South Bay Wheelmen. Professional road riders who will be racing on the track at the World Cup include Magnus Backstedt of Sweden, winner of the 2004 Paris-Roubaix and Tour de France stage winner.

A complete U.S. roster and list of international competitors and events schedule will be announced in the coming weeks.

LA World Cup Volunteers needed!! The third leg of the Track World Cup series will be at the ADT Event Center on January 18-20. I don’t have to tell you what that means—we need volunteers!

Since 2008 is an Olympic year and the World Cups are the primary means for athletes to qualify for Beijing, a huge turnout is expected. We will need extra helpers to monitor track sessions in the week prior to the event in addition to the usual tasks of: accreditation; race surfaces; videography; infield coordinators; medical control; translators (French, German, Russian, Spanish, Italian and many others); Runners and copying; protocol; and hospitality.

Remember ~ LAV Volunteers enjoy FREE ADMISSION to the World Cup

More details will follow after Christmas.

Thanks,

Linda Both
