What’s in your tool box? ~ Bike tools come in all shapes and sizes. While many tools are purchased at a bike shop and contained in a gear bag, other tools are learned on the bike.
Whether you ride on the track, on the road or in the dirt, the skills that are essential to successful cycling cannot be dismissed or substituted without consequence.
Track cycling has long been referred to as “pure” cycling. On the track you are forced to develop certain skills (herein referred to as “tools”) that make track cycling fun for you and safe for everyone around you. It just so happens that those same tools also carry over to most of the other cycling disciplines.
Cornering ~ Perhaps the most fundamental tools that track riders need in their tool box is the ability to hold a straight line as they lean through the turns while accelerating. Braking, backing off the pedals, steering from the bars and even hesitating will all send you (and likely the folks around you) sliding down the track at some point in time.
Braking ~ Track bikes have no brakes. The tool needed to adjust your speed up or down involves your feet not your hands. Intentional speed and lane changes require time and planning so the riders around you have time to interpret your actions and act accordingly. The riders around you simply cannot adjust to unpredictable speed or lane changes.
Looking ~ Velodromes around the world require riders to adhere to strict rules regarding training lanes and passing or transition lanes. Changing lanes at speed requires riders to develop the tool of looking in the direction you intend to move before moving up or down the track surface.
Pedaling ~ When the rider’s ability to coast and/or change gears in motion is removed, poor pedaling techniques are amplified. Smashing down on the pedals utilizing only the thigh muscles while failing to pull back and up on the backstroke sufficiently will leave riders and spectators wondering if this is a cycling or equestrian sport. The tool required is the ability to pedal in full circles including the bottom and back half of the circle.
Awareness ~ Understanding how one riders actions (no matter how small) affect the riders around and behind you is another valuable track tool. Being aware of everyone’s location and determining their intentions is essential. Riders need to realize how quickly things can happen on a 250m track. Riders must learn to constantly scan the track ahead and behind them to determine who is where at what speed. Awareness is likely the most important safety tool to have in your tool box.
Anticipation ~ It is enjoyable to watch international track events where multiple languages are spoken. The body language of the athletes combined with the strictly enforced track rules leave little doubt as to the intentions of the riders. Learning to anticipate speed changes and lane changes through body language is a tool that will allow riders to act more and react less.
Knowing what’s in your tool box will help you identify what’s missing.
Cheers!

Attn: Ladies Only! Thanks to our sponsor Louis Garneau, LOTS has donated one Time Trial Helmet to both LAVRA & Encino for the Ladies who participate in either of these 2 Time Trial Series. Every Lady who registers for and races in a TT event, will have their name put into the drawing for a helmet. “One entry per event per track” means that if you race 3 TT events at only 1 of Encino’s TT Days, your name would be entered into Encino’s drawing 3 times. If you race 3 TT events at each of the 3 TT Days, your name would entered 9 times. Same thing goes for ADT. Each track will have separate entries, separate drawings and separate prizes. As the season progresses we will be adding items to be won!
