Race Report ~ Wed-Sun Aug 6-10 ~ This past weekend the USAC Junior, U23, and Elite Road Championships were held in Orange County, CA. The kids were excited and the racing was fast.
The past weekend’s events began on Tuesday afternoon with the usual registration procedures. During registration, USAC provided a complimentary coaching seminar that was open to coaches, parents and athletes. Hosted by Sam Callen, we enjoyed 3 hours of CE classes which included discussions on how to help junior cyclists select the right coach and how juniors should plan to move up through the domestic ranks with efficiently. Perhaps the most important message of the evening was that of all the levels of racing, the Juniors are in the best position to be patient! The young juniors of today have loads of time and plenty of opportunities for growth and experience. Now is the time to simply enjoy cycling while acquiring the skills and tools that will allow them to gradually learn the in’s and out’s of the sport. There is no rush; time is on their side!
Wednesday, Aug 6th ITT ~ The first event of this National Championship weekend was the individual time trial that was held in Santiago Canyon on El Toro Road. It was hilly and it was hot but these Juniors were determined and raced their hearts out. The first racers to toe the line at 9:00am were the Elites and the last racers to toe the line after 3:00pm were the 10-12 yr olds. The staging area for the athletes participating in this event was the front parking lot of Saddleback Church at the corner of El Toro Rd and Marguerite. The parking lot was an endless sea of campers and canopies. With temperatures nearing 100* many orphans who were seen baking on trainers in the hot sun were invited to share some shade and a cold bottle of water under a canopy. Other than the Elite woman rider who cleared the mountain lion family off the course, perhaps the most exciting race division in the ITT was the Jr Boys 13-14 division. The top 13 finishers all finished the distance in 21 minutes and some odd seconds. Of them, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place finishers were each separated by less than 1 second! You’d have thought it was track race!!
Thursday, Aug 7th Crit ~ Held in the parking lot of the Angels Stadium the junior racing began early with the U23 girls and continued on throughout the day on the black top under the hot So Cal sun. The course was long and flat with no shade and nothing more than an occasional crash to split up the fields. The finishing straightaway was long enough and straight enough to entice the less experienced sprinters into hitting the gas pedal a bit too early only to find themselves shooting out the back of the pack long before they hit the line. There were plenty of shouts of both joy and disappointment throughout the day.
Friday, Aug 8th Road Race ~ Staging for the 5 mile loop of the junior championship road race course was the parking lot of the Portola Hills High School in Irvine. This wide open rolling course took the young riders through Avacado groves and past Eucalyptus trees while showcasing much of the area that was destroyed by the massive Santiago Canyon fire that ripped through here last fall. Again the relentless 100* heat and bright sunshine made for a challenging event. With Saddleback Mountain against our backs and the Pacific Ocean off in the haze of the horizon in front of us, the juniors raced from their hearts lap after lap until somebody won.
Through all of the challenges getting here and all of the challenges of racing, these kids truly raced every event. From Grandmas and Grandpas to Aunts and Uncles, these championship events provided a ton of excitement for everyone. Congratulations to all of our 2008 Junior National Road Champions!! But the work is not done yet as we are already resettled at the LA Velodrome for the Junior Track National Championships!
Complete race results of all the Championship Road events can be found on Cycling News.Com and at USAC.
