We are thankful for our health, our home and each other!

But this year has been very very difficult for many families around all of us. In searching for new ways to help some of these families, we recently became involved with an organization that helps homeless families with children. My 3 kids and I have become volunteer babysitters for the Illumination Foundation.

This foundation operates out of a hotel in Costa Mesa, CA that provides a number of services to the homeless. The bulk of their program works to get families w/children off the streets and into the hotel as a transition (back) to independent living. They also work with Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach by taking in homeless persons who have been discharged from the hospital but still need medical attention. Many private & public donations are used to fund the Illumination Foundation.

It is a comprehensive & effective program!! As you can imagine in this economy, the foundation is overwhelmed with the number of families who are homeless. Many of these families had good jobs and enjoyed independent living like you and me until they were laid off, or suffered some form of financial tragedy and lost everything from their pets to their dignity and are now homeless with their children.

In addition to being a family with children, one of the requirements for admission into the Illumination Foundation’s program is mandatory counseling 3 evenings per week. Volunteer Counselors provide information on everything from anger management to family counseling to job retraining.

This is where we come in. My kids & I babysit up to 2 dozen children three evenings a week while the parents (& older siblings) are in counseling sessions. We read books, do crafts & play cards with a great bunch of kids!

Of the 2 dozen kids that we have gotten to know, we have discovered that most of them are over weight and only a couple of them have a bicycle to ride and none of them have a helmet to wear.

How can you help? We are looking for 20 youth helmets & 20 youth bicycle donations in time for the foundation's Christmas Party on December 20th. These children range in age/size from 4-12 yrs old. We are asking for new items, but will be grateful for whatever you can donate!!

Dec 20th ~ My kids have also asked me if we can put together some fun fitness & cycling oriented Christmas gifts for the kids and for the Illumination Foundation in time for their Christmas Party on Dec 20th. We will appreciate items such as training wheels, handlebar grips & streamers, bicycle horns & bells, long & short jump ropes, hula hoops, twister, water bottles, sneakers, bicyle tubes & tires (for 12-24" wheels), floor pumps, shoes & socks (you’d be surprised at how many of these kids only pair of shoes is beach flip-flops!), & any other portable toys/games that encourage the kids to exercise while playing! There are a gazillion books & board/card games available to these kids but nothing that encourages exercise.

1 Very Special Need ~ The Illumination Foundation recently enrolled a homeless family with a young blind boy named Deshawn. Deshawn is 4 yrs old and has been blind since birth. Due to his family’s homelessness, he has not had access to age appropriate toys to play with and learn from. Both his family and the Illumination Foundation are in desperate need of touchy-feely toys, games, puzzles & books for this boy to facilitate his natural curiosity & learning needs. If you have any gently used items that you would like to give specifically to Deshawn for Christmas, please let me know.

Thank you to everyone who reads this!
Hebrews 13:5

JuliaJulia Crosshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12421209064893439936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6550606818927577868.post-46931000483831753142009-11-29T15:49:00.000-08:002009-11-29T15:55:55.050-08:00LOTS to be excited about...The final 2009 LOTS Sessions:
Encino Velodrome ~
Encino ~ Sat Dec 5th (9am-11am) Keiren School
Encino ~ Sat Dec 5th (11am-1pm) LOTS Session

The LOTS Keiren School session fee is $5.
The LOTS session fee is $10.
LOTS Racing School Session fee $50
All LOTS Session fees include the use of a Rental Bike.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2009 has been another successful year for LOTS. We fulfilled our goals to provide progressive rider education to Ladies who were previously certified and were ready to begin racing.
LOTS monthly “New Rider Certification Classes” enabled many women to experience the thrills of track cycling for the first time. These 2hr small group classes are designed to give us the opportunity to provide quality coaching to new and experienced riders. Together we learn pace line dynamics, Standing Start techniques, and general pack skills.
LOTS quarterly “Ladies Only Track School” sessions have also been hugely successful this year. These half day advanced sessions have given all of the participants the skills and confidence they need to participate in open training sessions and to begin racing. We discussed USAC’s rule book with respect to most Track Races, we learned about race tactics and rules for both individual and mass start races. Each LOTS Track School covered a different selection of racing skills and disciplines. We are excited to the new faces in the peleton in the 2010 racing season!
2010 LOTS ~ Whether you have 2 hrs of track experience or 2 decades of track experience, please bring a friends and join us on the velodrome for the final LOTS Session on this year on Sat Dec 5th and on Sat Jan 9th for the first LOTS Session of our 4th year as we continue to help each other develop these essential bike riding skills!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
LOTS of Sponsors ~ All of us appreciate the roll that financial and equipment sponsors play in the sport of cycling. Here is my current inventory (subject to availability) that I can deliver immediately. It will be another few weeks before I get my next set of frames. If you are interested please note that orders will be filled on a first come, first serve basis.

I am also able to have frames created that include club or private logos on them at great prices. The frames are not painted allowing for the carbon composite black look to be quite stunning. Stealthy some have described it. There is only a small logo on the headset area. A few in current inventory have The EDge on it in the usual places logos are found on bikes.

Current Inventory (items subject to change!): All measurements are for top tube center to center. He has decided to take advantage of being in the region and make some contacts in the cycling industry. Since most of the bikes in the world come from the Asia region he decided to see if he could bring some high quality items back for all of us to take advantage of. He focuses on carbon based bicycle frames, wheels, and accessories for now.

ANY ORDERS BEFORE THE END OF JULY ARE AT EXCELLENT SALE PRICE. MY STIMULUS PROGRAM!

From Ed ~ “My value proposition is to provide cyclists with the highest quality carbon frame, wheels, fork, seat post, and handle bars at a significantly lower price that you will anywhere on the net.” Finding the right high end manufacturer and combining that with negotiating a good low price (rather than being taken for a ride) is the key. Extending my experience in Asia to finding high end carbon bike manufacturers is a fun extension of my experience to my hobby of cycling. My goal is to bring high quality carbon composite frame, fork, seat post, wheels, etc, to folks at a reasonable price. No fancy names or middle men. So a referral network will be my approach. I am at my local track every day, anyone that purchases items from me will know exactly where to find me if there were any issues.

Folks can get bargains on all the other components via the net. The name brands are there and easily found. But to get a quality carbon fiber design and for a great price, you cannot be sure on the internet.

One other endeavor I have been working at for 5 years is my website www.bicyclingworld.com. The announcer said something in the order of "We have a new reigning Women's 70 + road champion - Patricia Baker"

The course had two 7% climbs including the final one to the finish. It was a fantastic day with the weather cooler than expected. I am on cloud nine.

I talked to Andrea from USA Cycling and it seems that there is a new push to attarct more women riders. (about time I would say). She interviewed me after the race and we will see how far that goes.

Before the race a heavy set 13 or 14 year old boy came up to me and said." Don't you think that you are a bit old to be riding a bike" I said "No Way!" and resisted the urge to smack him. :)

The UCI threw a wrench in the works with the new bike specs, I had my ISAAC templated on Saturday and it failed. My seat is too far forward. The first 4 bikes they did failed for the same reason. I managed to slide my saddle as far back as it will go and it may just barely be OK. That really sucks as I now have to ride with a new position. I rode the course today and I can feel it.

I needed to share this information with my cycling friends in So Cal.

Pat
2009 70+ Women's National Road ChampionJulia Crosshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12421209064893439936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6550606818927577868.post-35361188141305247132009-06-16T17:00:00.000-07:002009-06-17T08:24:35.731-07:00LOTS of Track EventsThe next LOTS Sessions are as follows:
Encino Velodrome ~ Please Note the Start times of each session!

Encino ~ Sat July 11 (1-3pm).
